Essential inbound travel insurance is mandatory for Tanzania

Inbound travel insurance requirement

Effective 1 October 2026, foreign visitors entering Tanzania are required to obtain the applicable Inbound Travel Insurance.

This is determined by their first point of entry into the country for a Tanzania safari.

Through Mainland Tanzania entry, the requirement is established under the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026 – Government Notice No. 256. It applies to entry through airports, seaports, and land borders. Additionally, the Tanzania safari inbound policy has a premium of USD 44 and covers up to 92 days.

Once you have obtained the applicable inbound insurance based on your first point of entry, you do not need to purchase a second inbound policy when subsequently travelling between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar during the validity of your cover.

Please keep a digital or printed copy of your insurance certificate readily available for verification throughout your journey.

NIC’s current operational framework also provides for system integration with ZIC to facilitate verification of inbound travel insurance policies issued by ZIC.

WHO IS EXEMPT?

According to current NIC operational guidance, the following categories are exempt from the Mainland inbound insurance requirement:

* Tanzanian residents
* Foreign nationals holding valid work or residence permits
* Diaspora
* Diplomats
* Transit passengers
* Residents of East African Community (EAC) Partner States
* Residents of Southern African Development Community (SADC) Partner States

Travelers who fall within an exemption category should carry the appropriate supporting documentation and keep it readily available when travelling.

WHAT DOES THE INSURANCE COVER?
