Departure Location – Zanzibar Airport

Mount Meru is located in the heart of Arusha National Park and it is 50 miles west of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru is a massive volcano reaching 14,980 feet (4,565 meters). This trek serves as an ideal warm up for Mt. Kilimanjaro due to its altitude acclimatization and hiking distances. Mount Meru climbing, This trek is also geared towards hikers that prefer less crowds and a challenging ascent.

The trek to the top of Mount Meru takes 3 to 4 days, and with our two trekking options you can decide whether you would like to tackle Meru at a fast or slightly slower pace and since Mt. Meru is located in Arusha National Park, hikers must climb with an armed ranger due to the wide range of wildlife living on the mountain. On the lower slopes of the mountain, hikers are more likely to see elephants, giraffes, and buffalo! As hikers continue their ascents, the trail follows the north rim of the volcano’s crater along a dramatic ridge line. Throughout the climb, hikers sleep in designated huts along the trail. Hikers reach the summit at sun rise will have spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and of the Mt. Meru Crater. Mount Meru is also known as the little brother to Kilimanjaro but it’s still the fifth highest mountain on the African continent. Come Mount Meru trekking with Inquisitive Africa Adventures for an experience you will never forget!

At Inquisitive Africa Adventures, we are pleased to offer combination treks of both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru or Mount Meru and Safari, Mount Meru and Beach holiday or both Mount Meru, Mount Kilimanjaro, Safari and Beach holiday. Whether you choose to trek Mount Meru on its own or in combination, Meru will enthral with it stunning vistas of its surroundings and views of its big brother, Mount Kilimanjaro, to the east.

Best Time to Take a Mount Meru Trekking Tour

Mount Meru can be trekked all year around, though the best time to tackle this mountain is during the dry season, from Mid-May to the beginning of March. If you’re considering a Mount Meru trekking tour during November or December you should expect occasional rains during these months. For the best views of the snow-capped rooftop of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, we recommend planning your Meru trek for January or February.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a large, unbroken, un-flooded caldera, formed when a giant volcano erupted and collapsed some three million years ago. Had it not become a caldera, it is possible that the volcanic mountain would be about the same height as Kilimanjaro. The caldera is 600m deep, 16km across and 265 sq km in area. Enjoy the spectacular scenery and game viewing, in what has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. Many of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhino can be seen grazing on the open grassland of the crater floor, surrounded by some of the 25,000 large animals that occupy the crater, including lion, cheetah, wildebeest, eland, zebra and gazelle.
